Deep within the mesmerizing rolling fields, dwelt a shepherd boy. His life was essentially unadulterated, and unsophisticated. His only responsibility was essentially to look after his flock of rams.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the gales across the single tree on the mountaintop were his only companions. Day upon day, guarding his charges instilled in him a feeling of calm satisfaction.
But, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. In one such instance out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plot.
Tales of predators hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but found no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick laughed for a few days more. But, one noon, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy ran for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But click here this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Devastated, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the results of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to regain. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
